Getting found by AI search

Plain-English guides to the things that decide whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity can find, read and recommend your business.

Getting recommended by an AI assistant is not the same job as ranking on Google. Search engines hand a visitor a list of links to choose from; an AI assistant names two or three businesses and stops. There is no page two, so the gap between being mentioned and being invisible is total.

Most of the work is unglamorous and technical. AI assistants reach your site through crawlers with their own names — GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended — and each is allowed or blocked independently of Googlebot. Plenty of sites that rank perfectly well are blocked from every one of them, usually by a robots.txt rule nobody remembers writing or a CDN setting switched on by default.

The guides below cover the specific fixes, in the order they matter: unblocking AI crawlers, making content readable without JavaScript, adding structured data, and writing answers in a shape an assistant can quote. Each one is written from real audits, and you can check your own site against all of it with the free scanner.
